Brothers Ryan and Evan Deere are looking to make their second foray into world of amateur Mixed Martial Arts at FightQuest 6. The two have been training for more than two years now and are using this as an opportunity to gain valuable experience.

In fact, that is the reason fighter Stephane Vigneault and trainer Firas Zahabi (UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierres trainer) started FightQuest. When they first started FightQuest three years ago their plan was to give amateur fighters a place to fight in a safe and regulated environment.

Over the past three years FightQuest has produced some top fighters who have turned pro, such as Akwesasnes Daylin Logan and Michael Ricci. Robbie Dickson, who is one of the FightQuest owners, said prior to FightQuest there were fighters turning pro without any true experience. This was causing a watering-down of the various professional MMA promotions in Quebec, Dickson said. He also said that it was dangerous for the fighters as well.

(FightQuest) has become a proving ground for the professional promotions in the province, Dickson said, referring to XMMA and TKO (which has been bought by XMMA).

Ryan Deere will be hoping to improve his record to 1-1 on Saturday. He will be taking on Jake Simon from Six Nations, Ontario in the 185 lbs category. Ryan will be looking to use his boxing skills to win this fight.

Im hoping to knock him out with my punching, Ryan said. Im not planning on going down.

He also said since his first fight hes been working with Yannick Bergeron, from Drummondville on his boxing and with Stephane Vigneault on his ground technique.

An interview with the Deere brothers

Evan will be fighting at 205 lbs against Shawn McDonald. His strategy is going to keep the fight standing and utilize his kicking. But he said, if the fight does go to the ground hes not worried because one of his strengths is his jui jitsu.

If it goes to the ground then hopefully Ill take an arm or his neck and choke him out, Evan said.

FightQuest 6 takes place on Saturday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Skratch in Laval (965 boulevard Cure-Labelle). Tickets cost $25 each and are still available by calling the MMA Fight Shop at 450-638-6363.
